Activities

We've covered school & work, what about the other two hours of the day? What about the days that have no school or work responsibilities?

To that I respond- sports and the great outdoors.

Ever since I was big enough to catch and throw, I've been playing sports. I've never been an athlete that was intensely focused on training, doing track workouts, or spending ungodly hours in the gym. Nope, I've been the type that simply enjoys playing sports:

  • Hardball/Sandlot Baseball
  • Co-Ed Softball
  • Basketball
  • Sand Volleyball
  • Ultimate Frisbee
  • Goaltimate
  • Camping + hiking
  • As I get older, participating in sports, as well as organizing other outdoor outings serve as enjoyable social outings as well as a valuable function that helps this child-free adult man from developing a "Dad bod."

If you're curious about what "Sandlot Baseball" is, here's a pretty good look:

The team I play for, The Austin Switch, plays at The Longtime (the Texas Playboys home field) only a few times a year. The rest of the time, we use various city baseball fields, but the attitude and style is still very much the same.

To be perfectly honest, it's basically adults playing little league.

Another question you may have is, what is "goaltimate?"

That's a fair question. Due to space considerations as well as limited numbers, many ultimate frisbee players decided that there needed to be a "half court/half field" version of their preferred sport. The game is fairly easy to understand. Many of the same rules to ultimate frisbee apply, but with a few amendments. A brief explanation can be viewed here:

Lastly, a very simple activity to discuss is camping. For me, camping combines so much of what I love- a roadtrip is usually involved, getting away from urban areas and to someplace beautiful, sleeping under the stars, exploring, hiking gear to a primitive site, building a fire, consuming an adult beverage or two, and flat-out enjoying life while acknowledging just how fortunate we are to have each and every day.
